Mothers of children and young adults with ordinary disabilities are one of the groups that face the threat of social exclusion. If one adds refugee status and the various difficulties of adaptation and integration in a new country, the difficulties increase manifold. In such a situation, the help of a carer with experience of working with people with disabilities, who can be with the child a few hours a week, is very effective. This allows his or her mother, for example, to work, to go to post-secondary school, to have some respite time, and to deal with various institutional paperwork and all the issues of daily life.
The caregiver can either come to the home or be with a small group of children at the Patchwork Integration and Support Centre, during the time when the mother can spend on activities, courses, workshops etc.
